Biography

Chris is an associate solicitor in the Churches and Charities team. He specialises in advising charities on all aspects of property law, including buying and selling property, landlord and tenant matters, licence agreements, trusts and unregistered land, development work, restrictive covenants, easements and holding property as an investment.

He has extensive experience of dealing with property issues in relation to places of worship, including listed buildings.

Chris also advises schools, small businesses and individuals in property matters such as residential conveyancing, commercial leases, assured shorthold tenancies and probate sales.

Recent Experience

  • Advising the trustees of an independent school in Wales on the sale of former sports facilities and two boarding houses
  • Advising the trustees of a Methodist church based in South London on a lease of solar panels to be installed on the roof of the church building
  • Advising a well-known national charity on the acquisition from its parent charity of a property providing supported accommodation, having previously advised the same organisation on the acquisition and financing of a portfolio of properties providing supported accommodation the previous year
  • Advising a charity on a land swap deal with an affiliated Roman Catholic Order in relation to the land and buildings comprising a nursing home and grounds outside London, also requiring advice on connected persons under section 118 of the Charities Act 2011
  •  Advising an independent schools trust on the acquisition of a site for a new school. The matter involved not just the acquisition of the freehold site, but also two new leases of playing fields with different landlords, advice on option and pre-emption agreements relating to various adjoining parcels of land, and advice in relation to existing tenants on site. Chris also advised on the financing aspects of the transaction.
