Michael Freeman, the Isabel Hospice Chairman of Trustees is delighted to welcome Angela Lever, of Bishop’s Stortford solicitors Pothecary Witham Weld to the position of Trustee. Angela heads the Private Client department of the firm.
Michael explains “Trustees can normally expect to spend between 10 and 35 hours a week on Hospice matters. The demands on our free service are increasing all the time and as the demand increases, so it becomes all the more important that we plan and work to ensure that we will always have the staff, premises and financial resources to ensure that we will always be there for our patients and their families. This has never been more critical than during the current economic downturn, and we are delighted to welcome Angela to our board.”
Anglea Lever added “Isabel hospice is a wonderful organization; the work of Isabel Hospice has a huge impact on the lives of many people in our community when it is needed most. It is a real honour for me to be associated with such a caring organization; I trust that my contribution, however small, can make a difference.” |

The Equality Act 2010, which is not yet in force, aims to harmonise and strengthen existing anti-discrimination legislation.
With the transition of governments there had been some uncertainty whether or not the Conservatives would adhere to Labour’s implementation timetable. The Government Equalities Office website recently stated that “the Government is currently considering how the different provisions will be commenced so that the Act is implemented in an effective and proportionate way”.
On Saturday 3rd July 2010 Theresa May, Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, confirmed on the same website that implementation “will go ahead to the planned October timetable”.
The Act will have far-reaching effects on businesses, charities and not-for-profit organisations.
For further detail on how the Equality Act 2010 will affect charities please see an article on the subject in our July 2010 newsletter. If you are not already on our mailing list and would like to receive this and future newsletters, please contact Arthur Byng Nelson or your usual contact in the Church and Charities Department. |

One month deadline to reclaim Spanish CGT
Britons who sold a property in Spain between 1997 and 2006 must begin the process of reclaiming capital gains tax (CGT) that they were illegally charged by the Spanish government on the sale of their property before the end of July 2010.
This is due to the Spanish government imposing a CGT charge of 35 per cent compared to a rate of 15 per cent paid by Spanish nationals.
According to the foreign exchange service, to date hundreds of Britons have reclaimed an average of £14,980 each from the Spanish tax office.
In November last year, the European Court of Justice ruled in favour of claimants and said that any UK/EU citizen who sold a Spanish property between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2006 could successfully claim. All claims need to be settled by the end of October and as August is a holiday month in Spain, people have only a few days left to begin the three-month claim process. |
