Introduction

The late Miss Waddilove, who lived abroad, left a portion of her estate on trust for charitable purposes. She had indicated during her lifetime both the types of charitable purposes she favoured and the way in which her funds should be used and we intend to use our discretionto follow those wishes as far as possible.

Please scroll down to find out if you are eligible for a grant, and for information about when and how to apply. You are strongly advised to read all of the information carefully as there are essential criteria that you must satisfy. There are also very specific dates as to when you should make your application.

When to apply

The Trustees aim to meet in January, April, July and October.

The next meeting is scheduled for October.

Applications for this meeting open on Monday 23rd August 2010 and will close on Friday 17th September at 5.30pm.  We would ask you to note that applications received after 5.30pm will not be considered.

Depending on the number of applications we received, the Trustees may decide to close applications before 17th September and so you should continue to monitor the website before starting your application and also whilst you are preparing it to avoid disappointment.

If you send an application to the administrator while applications are closed, it will not receive consideration and will be rejected. The Trustees will reserve the right not to receive applications from that applicant for a period of two years.

Please see the section below headed ‘acknowledging your application’ and ‘contacting us’ if you have already submitted an application.

Essential and desirable criteria

4 The applicant is not requesting funds to reimburse professional or salary costs
5 The applicant will carry out the project themselves, or will rely on volunteers to carry out the project
6 The applicant has demonstrated a successful track record of delivering previous projects

8 The capital nature of the project benefits the community as a whole
9 The applicant is not requesting funds for a homework, holiday, or infant pre or afterschool club
10 The applicant does not have reserves from which funding for the project can be found
11 The application relates to a project where the beneficiaries are in the United Kingdom, except where the level of public benefit abroad can be assessed
12

The application is made by a UK charity, except where details of the foreign registered charity can be assessed

13 The applicant has been able to raise additional funds from elsewhere towards the project

There is further guidance below as to the types of projects we fund, giving answers to the most frequently asked questions in relation to favoured projects. Please see the section,  ‘Frequently asked questions about the types of projects the Trustees aim to fund’

Policy on Branches/ Non Registered Charities/ CICs

Branches

The Trustees will accept applications from branches of larger charities if the branch itself is registered with the Charity Commission. The Branch must state on the application form that there is no financial link to any other charity and that no funds are received from, or are transferred to the main or umbrella charity.

Generally, the Trustees will not favour an application from a department of a large higher education institution such as a University. They will however consider each application on a case by case basis and they may be more likely to favour the institution if the project relates to medical research. The department will need to demonstrate the links and financial independence to and from the institution in much the same way as a branch or related charity.

Non Registered Charities

You may be asked for copies of your constitution and latest accounts. You will also be asked to supply a copy of your bank statement if you are a small charity as described in the essential criteria above.

CICs

If you are applying on behalf of a CIC, you must state on the application:
How you advance public benefit, and who your intended beneficiaries are
     How you use your profits
If applicable, how any of your income is used to pay for non charitable expenditurePlease refer to the Charity Commission if you need further guidance on public benefit, and on what is and what is not classed as charitable expenditure.

How much will you receive

We will usually provide grants that range from £1,000 to £10,000. Applicants must specify the amount they require. The Trustees may choose to stagger a grant or make any commitment to funding subject to satisfactory reports. Grants must only be used for the purpose stated in the application form.

Policy on repeat applications

No charity should apply more than once in two years - more frequent applications will not be considered. If a grant is given to your charity, no further grant will be given for five years unless we agree that you may apply within that time when we make the original grant.

How to apply

Please complete the website application form which can be accessed via the link below. We would request that you do not send a covering email or covering letter which refers to your application as the Trustees will not look at this and will only review the application form.

Frequently asked questions about the types of projects the Trustees aim to fund

Q. Do you fund annual events or the repeat of a successful event?
A. No. the Trustees do not consider an annual event or repeat as a new project. It is also very rare for such an event to be of a capital nature
Q. Do you fund workshops
A. The Trustees do not fund workshops unless they are able to consider a capital cost connected with the workshop, such as the purchase of equipment or materials or in very rare circumstances where an identifiable capital benefit is achieved.  The Trustees will not usually fund holiday or homework clubs.  See the Desirable Criteria above.
Q. What type of workshop project might receive funding?
A. Workshops that provide a unique educational aspect not otherwise available, and which also can produce some lasting skill or product might receive some consideration by the Trustees. These projects must be innovative and inexpensive and not amount to a request to reimburse professional fees. A workshop exploring and applying theatre, dance, composition, performance alone will not receive funding
Q. What type of educational projects will you fund?
A. The project must be of a capital nature and provide a unique educational aspect not otherwise available, and which also can produce some lasting skill or product. This means that it is something not usually available on the curriculum or not accessible by beneficiaries from their available schools and academic institutions. The beneficiaries must do more than just take part, to the extent that after five years, the project must have made a difference to their lives. The Trustees will not usually fund holiday or homework clubs.  See the Desirable Criteria above.
Q. Do you fund visits / educational visits
A. The Trustees will not fund visits organised for beneficiaries that are carried out for educational purposes unless there is a unique and potentially life changing benefit
Q. Do you fund overseas projects?
A. In very limited circumstances, the Trustees will consider funding a project based overseas, or administered from the United Kingdom where the benefit is overseas. This will only be if they are able to assess the level of public benefit being delivered and the capital value to intended beneficiaries, which will only be the case if the applicant is a registered charity in the United Kingdom, or the application is made through a UK registered Charity. The Trustees may in rare circumstances consider an application which relates to an area in which Miss Waddilove had an interest
Q. Do you fund salaries/ professional fees?
A. The Trustees in rare circumstances will consider such payments in relation to start-up costs
Q. I am an individual carrying out a project on my own or I am linked to, or fundraising with a registered charity, or another organisation. Can I apply?
A. No. Only Charities and CICs may apply
Q. We have lost core funding or other pledged grants. Will you help?

A. No. The policy is not to grant replacement funds
